A comparison between alkaline ionized water and water produced in the Vitalizer Plus

Electromagnetic fields create a unique phase of matter in some liquids known as a liquid crystal. The liquid crystalline phase of water, sometimes referred to as hexagonal water, exhibits many of the qualities of a solid crystal. It can amplify and transfer signals and other information — this is its function within biological organisms. A number of health benefits are emerging for those who consume this type of water and it would appear that the liquid crystalline phase of water supports superior hydration, enhanced nutrient absorption, more effective detoxification, increased metabolic efficiency, and improved cellular communication. Because these benefits are desirable, many researchers have attempted to devise methods to generate and to stabilize liquid crystalline water for consumption. Both ionizers and the Vitalizer Plus produce hexagonal water. However, there are some very basic differences in the methods of production and in the quality of the resulting water.

Electric vs. magnetic fields

Ionized water is made as water is subjected to strong electric fields. The Vitalizer Plus creates a vortex and spins water within a magnetic field. Both methods bring structure to water. However, the strong electric forces used during ionization are destructive to water’s natural electromagnetic field. The water is shattered and the liquid crystalline state can only be maintained as long as electric current passes through the water. When the water leaves the electric field, it begins to lose its structure immediately. In contrast, the circulation of water within a magnetic field closely approximates the way nature brings structure to water. As water moves, it naturally spins within the gentle magnetic field of the Earth. This establishes a cooperative relationship between water molecules. When one molecule moves, they all move together — like a school of fish. Water produced in the Vitalizer Plus has a living quality that is not present in ionized water.

Minerals

Ionization splits the water molecule into its ions (H+ and OH—). Two streams of water are generated. Positively—charged ions (H+) are attracted to negatively—charged mineral ions (phosphorous, chlorine, sulfur, iodine etc.). This is the acidic stream of water that is typically discarded. Negatively—charged water ions (OH—) are attracted to positively—charged mineral ions (calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc.) This is the alkaline water that is recommended for consumption. Because of the strong electric forces used during ionization, minerals bound to hydroxide ions are not available for use in the body. Most of them end up as arterial plaque or as deposits in joints and other tissues. In contrast, the Vitalizer Plus releases minerals from a small mineral basket in the center of the pitcher. These minerals are just enough to support the structure of the water and to enhance the water’s ability to conduct energetic information. They are especially important if the original water is distilled or produced by reverse osmosis. Minerals in vitalized water are not electrostatically bound to hydroxide ions. They are ionized during the spinning of the water and are free to participate in cellular functions.

pH

Most ionizers can be adjusted to produce alkaline water with a pH anywhere from 8 to 10 or higher. If the source water is low in minerals, higher pH values cannot be produced without the addition of minerals. (Some companies sell mineral powders or solutions that can be added to the original water.) Most proponents of ionized water suggest drinking water with a pH between 8.5 and 9.5 in an effort to neutralize excess acidic wastes in the body. This is a highly controversial and contestable issue. There appears to be no science to support the claim that drinking alkaline water actually neutralizes acidic wastes. By contrast, the minerals released from the mineral basket in the Vitalizer Plus typically raise the pH to just above neutral (this depends on the pH of the original water). The Vitalizer Plus is not intended as an alkalizer. The minerals are intended to balance the water —; especially if the water has been processes by reverse osmosis or distillation. An average of 8 ppm (parts per million) from the mineral basket are released during a 9—minute vitalizer cycle.

ORP

Alkaline ionized water has a strong electrical potential typically measured as ORP (oxidation—;reduction potential). When a solution has a negative ORP it has an abundance of electrons. A positive ORP indicates that a solutions is lacking in free electrons. Electrons are reductants — the opposite of oxidants. They can neutralize free radicals. Ionization can push the ORP value of water down to between —;100 and —;850 mV depending on the original water and depending on the capacity of the ionizer. This gives alkaline ionized water a tremendous electron potential and a tremendous potential to neutralize free radicals. It is one reason people who drink alkaline ionized water experience relief from many symptoms. Vitalized water is electron—;rich too (as is most structured water) but not nearly to the extent that alkaline ionized water is. Vitalized water can have an ORP anywhere between —;100 and +100 mV depending on the original water. According to the principles of Biological Terrain Analysis developed by Louis Claude Vincent in France in the 1940s, an overabundance of reductants (in this case, electrons) is equally as harmful as an overabundance of oxidants. Professor Vincent determined that near neutral ORP values were more balancing for the internal fluids of the human body than either highly positive (electron poor) or highly negative (electron rich) ORP values. According to professor Vincent, these values applied to water as well as to internal fluids.

Filtration

Most ionizers are plumbed into the water line. Typically they sit on a countertop and provide alkaline water on demand. Prior to the ionization process, water passes through a filter to remove contaminants. Each brand of ionizer has its own type of filter. Most use some sort of carbon filtration designed to remove chlorine and other standard contaminants. The Vitalizer Plus is not a water filter. It is not plumbed to the water line. The Vitalizer Plus uses the water of your choice — distilled, reverse osmosis, spring water, filtered, or bottled water. It is not intended to be used with tap water.

With so much discussion of the need to alkalize, one of the biggest questions on people’s minds is whether or not to drink alkaline ionized water. Much has been written on the subject by many well-intentioned individuals. However, the subject has been grossly oversimplified. Much of the information being circulated regarding the health benefits of alkaline ionized water is either inaccurate or incomplete.
There are seven major reasons (and many minor ones) why NOT to drink alkaline ionized water. They are discussed briefly below. More in depth information can be found in the recent book, Dancing with Water.

1. The first and most obvious red flag regarding the consumption of alkaline ionized water is its potential impact on digestion. If the digestive process begins in the stomach which is an extremely acidic environment, what is the impact of increasing the pH in the stomach by consuming alkaline water? Fifty percent of people over the age of 60 are hypochlorhydric. This means that they can no longer produce enough stomach acid for optimal digestion. For these individuals, the consumption of alkaline water presents a big problem. You might be surprised to discover how many people who begin to drink alkaline ionized water end up with digestive trouble—and they have no idea it results from the water.

2. The second reason is also obvious when you think about it. Water ionizers separate water into two streams.  One contains acidic minerals: sulfur, phosphorus, iodine, chlorine, etc. This part of the water is usually discarded— it is not advocated for consumption. The other stream of water contains alkaline minerals: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, etc. Take a look at the minerals in each list. Are they all necessary in the human body?  Absolutely! Then ask yourself another question: Where in nature does water or food ever provide alkaline minerals without their acidic counterparts?  Is just doesn’t happen, and no organism is designed to use one without the other. The chemistry of life is dependent on the balance between acids and bases (alkaline). One without the other for an extended period of time is an invitation for imbalance.

3. The third reason not to drink alkaline ionized water has to do with the molecular structure of water. Many of water’s unique qualities result from its ability to form hydrogen bonds. These weak electrostatic bonds link one water molecule to another to form a network of interconnected H2O molecules. Under normal circumstances this network is random. However, when water is placed in either an electric or a magnetic field, the molecules align to form a geometric pattern known as a liquid crystal. Liquid crystals possess many of the qualities of solid crystals including the ability to amplify and transfer signals. The consumption of water in this liquid crystalline state has numerous health benefits. Nature supplies weak electric (called piezoelectric) fields and magnetic fields that create this liquid crystalline phase of water. Those who sell ionizers would like you to believe that the strong electric current used during ionization produces this same kind of water. It does not. Strong electric currents (like those used during ionization) have a damaging effect on the electromagnetic field around water molecules. In essence, they electrocute the water and leave it without life force. Although electric currents do cause water molecules to align, the molecular organization falls apart rapidly as soon as the water leaves the electric field. Water that has been treated in this manner is not capable of carrying the finely-tuned signals and vibratory information that water is intended to carry within the human body.

4. During ionization, water molecules are split (ionized). Positively-charged ions (H+) are attracted to negatively-charged mineral ions (phosphorous, chlorine, sulfur, iodine etc.) to form a variety of acidic compounds in the acidic steam of water. Negatively-charged water ions (OH-) are attracted to positively-charged mineral ions (calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc) in the formation of numerous alkaline compounds in the alkaline stream of water.  Depending on the minerals present in the original water, the alkaline compounds in the alkaline portion of the water may not be something you are interested in drinking. For example: the most common alkaline mineral compounds that form in alkaline ionized water are calcium hydroxide (lime), sodium hydroxide (lye), potassium hydroxide (caustic potash), and magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia—a laxative). Because of the strong electric forces used during ionization, the minerals, bound to hydroxide ions, are not available for use in the body. Most of them end up as arterial
plaque or as mineral deposits in joints and other tissues.

5. One of the arguments in favor of alkaline water supposes that the consumption of alkaline water will negate the buildup of acids caused by our modern diet and lifestyle. There is no evidence to demonstrate this. It is a gross assumption to think that drinking alkaline water will alkalize tissues. The body is much more complex than this. If this were the case, then eating a lemon would contribute to acidosis. It does not. The lemon is considered to be one of the most alkalizing foods there is. While it has an acidic nature, it also releases alkaline minerals—in an organic form that the body can use. The pH of the human body is a complex and dynamic subject. While the blood requires a slightly alkaline pH, many organs and tissues require just the opposite. Research indicates that the environment inside the cell requires a slightly acidic pH—that alkalinity inside the cell causes cell death. Long-term consumption of alkaline water can actually contribute to acidosis. This is because acidosis is the body’s way to release hydrogen which becomes depleted with age and which it also requires to detoxify, to neutralize free radicals, and to fight disease. This is explained in much greater detail
in the book Dancing with Water.

6. While alkaline ionized water has been in use in Japan for over 20 years, the effects of long-term consumption have yet to be studied. Early use in Japan was in clinical settings and the water was used in controlled amounts for short periods of time. There are no long-term studies to identify potential problems with either extended or exclusive use. In the absence of human studies, rats (with a shorter life span) can be studied more easily.

Three separate studies have shown that long-term consumption of alkaline ionized water produces cell death (necrosis) and fibrosis of the heart muscle in rats. Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, a cardiac surgeon and Director of the Water Institute in Japan, was one of the scientists who conducted early research on alkaline ionized water. His work determined that the benefits of alkaline ionized water were largely due to the hydrogen in the water which dissipates rapidly after production. Ultimately, he renounced the use of ionized water in favor of other methods to produce hydrogen-rich water.

7. One of the biggest arguments in favor of alkaline ionized water is that its strong electron potential neutralizes free radicals. While it is true that alkaline ionized water has a strong electrical potential (evidenced by negative ORP values), the water is very imbalanced. Consumption may initially reduce the free radical load but continued consumption and the aggressive neutralization of oxygen radicals upsets cellular redox balance—now shown to play a pivotal role in immune function and metabolic homeostasis. Oxygen radicals serve as signaling molecules. Medical research verifies that their absence is equally as harmful as their overabundance. The ongoing consumption of alkaline ionized water scavenges free radicals too aggressively and tips the balance in the opposite direction.

Nature is always about balance—not extremes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, taking strong YANG herbs (like alkaline water), for too long, overheats and burns the body out. Ultimately, it contributes to aging. Like many of the Yang herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Alkaline ionized water can be therapeutic for short periods of time but it should never be considered as regular drinking water day in and day out—unless you are prepared for digestive problems, organ failure, arterial build-up, joint calcification, and metabolic imbalances.

How Does PH and ORP effect Vitalized Hexagonal water?

Proponents of alkaline ionized water rely on three significant changes to the water produced by electrolysis to explain the beneficial effects of consuming alkaline ionized water: Two of these (pH and ORP) are addressed to answer your question.

1. Increased pH

During electrolysis, strong electrical forces cause ions to be unnaturally charged.  The OH- ion from water combines with positively-charged mineral ions. This creates a variety of alkaline compounds that increase the pH of the water. However, drinking alkaline water dilutes stomach acids and depletes hydrogen reserves in the body.

While those who promote alkaline ionized water propose that the stomach is capable of producing HCl on demand, they have overlooked the increasing number of people with hypochlorhydria (the decreased ability of the stomach to produce HCl with age.) Both the elderly and those with hypochlorhydria are already at a disadvantage and cannot produce more HCl to compensate for the consumption of alkaline water.

By contrast, magnetic ionization of water (produced in the Vitalizer Plus) also raise the pH–very slightly. With these gentler forces, ions develop a natural electromagnetic field that slightly repels other ions. The result of magnetic ionization is that mineral ions tend to remain separated in the water. As individual ions, they are more easily transferred through cellular membranes to be utilized for a myriad of metabolic functions.

The issue of pH is grossly misunderstood. I include with this email an attachment – an article published by NEXUS magazine in 2008 that goes into the issue more deeply.

2. Changes in ORP (oxidation-reduction potential)

ORP (oxidation-reduction potential)isa measure of electron activity. It is also a relative measure of antioxidant capacity. When a solution has a negative ORP value it has an abundance of available electrons with which to neutralize free radicals. A solution with a negative ORP is an antioxidant. Generally speaking, the more negative the ORP value, the more powerful its antioxidant potential. Most bottled water has an ORP between +150 and +300 mili-volts. Some tap water measures as high as +500.

During electrolysis, alkaline water gains an excess number of electrons. This is one of the reasons that the electrical charge on ions is so strong. It is also the reason alkaline mineral ions bind so tightly together with the hydroxyl ion (OH-) from water. Alkaline ionized water can have an ORP value anywhere between -100 and -850 depending on the original water and depending on the ionizer. This gives the water a tremendous capacity to neutralize free radicals—especially if the water is consumed right away.

However, water does not have to be electrolyzed to carry an abundance of electrons. Simply structuring water creates electron-rich water capable of neutralizing free radicals.[i],[ii] Structured water also has an increased capacity to hold hydrogen ions—premier antioxidants. The number of free electrons may be greater in alkaline ionized water but the lack of coherence in the water restricts their ability to be continually excited. The water loses its energy rapidly.

Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, a cardiac surgeon and Director of the Water Institute in Japan, was one of the scientists who conducted early research on alkaline ionized water. His work determined that the benefits of alkaline ionized water were largely due to the hydrogen in the water. According to his research, hydrogen has the potential to balance pH and to combat free radicals even better than alkaline ionized water. Ultimately, he abandoned the use of electrolysis and developed another way to produce hydrogen-rich water which is a far better antioxidant than alkaline ionized water.
